Phoenix Lake Golf Course Northern California

Phoenix Lake Golf Course is one of the golf courses in California that might be overlooked because it is just nine holes long. However, this well-contoured layout by Bert Stamp is worth two trips around it to make for an 18 hole outing. The 2,711 yard par 35 Sonora golf course carries a slope of 115. It was opened almost a half-century ago, in 1968. Different sets of tees allow it to be played as a par 70 course measuring 5,322 yards long. As a result, many trees that dot the course have matured. One player said that it was the best nine hole Sonora golf course, and that it was also the best value for Sonora tee time deals.

The 180 yard third hole is unique in that one has to thread a tee shot through a forty yard opening in the woods to even reach the green. Sullivan Creek has to be negotiated on a number of the holes, and those with claustrophobic tendencies may find that certain narrow, tree-lined fairways appear awfully daunting. Phoenix Lake GC, situated in the heart of the Sierra Nevada, is close to the Dodge Ski Resort. It offers a driving range, practice green, and PGA golf instruction. The pro shop and dining facilities are that much nicer now that the clubhouse has been remodeled. Play this scenic layout in a picturesque area, and you will bring home some great golf memories.
